It should help: Rinsing with salt water would help an abscess tooth, but only temporarily since salt helps to draw out the exudates and therefore relieve the pain but does not eliminate the cause of the exudates. Abcess tooth required antibiotic treatment (clindamycin preferably) and root canal treatment.

Not helpful: This is like placing a bandaid on a broken arm. If you are having that much pain, it sounds like you have a root canal problem. Call your dentist asap. Problems get worse, not better. Taking advil (ibuprofen) 3-4 every 4 hr short term may help until you are seen.

Yes: Yes, often helpful in conjunction with antibiotics and pain meds.

Temporary: Antibiotics, salt water rinses, OTC analgesics, can all help reduce symptoms until you actually have the abscess (infection) treated. The tooth may require root canal treatment or extraction. It will not self-heal. It needs to be treated. See your Dentist ASAP.

Yes, you can: However, if not treated, a serious dental abscess can eventually kill. The infection may spread to your jaw, cheeks, sinus and to other areas of your head and neck. The salt water or antibiotics will give you only a temporary relief. See any dentist for examination, x-rays and treatment.
