A member asked:

How does coolsculpting work? i have heard about coolsculpting a lot lately, but i only know its name and that it can be a non-invasive alternative to liposuction. while a non-invasive procedure sounds very appealing, i'm a little confused about how that's

CoolSculpting : Coolsculpting is a non-surgical treatment used to decreased localized areas of fat beneath the skin. It can be used as a less dramatic alternative to surgical liposuction. A device is applied to the area to be treated and it is left in place for several minutes. The skin is gradually cooled by the device and the fat beneath is cooled to such a degree that it essentially is recognized by the body as waste and is eventually disposed of. This doesn't occur overnight, but instead takes several weeks. The results can be an improvement in localized bulges where stubborn areas of fatty deposition remain. This treatment as well as liposuction are used to reduce localized areas of fatty excess which are causing a contour deformity. Usually, this is the waistline, for example, where there is a bulge of fat beneath the skin. Often, people exercise but certain problem areas just don't resolve. These treatments are not used for weight loss or to reduce the overall amount of fat contained within your body. Coolsculpting typically requires several sessions to achieve the final desired outcome. The benefits are several: no anesthesia is required, no recovery period is needed, you may return to normal activities immediately, there is minimal pain, and there are no scars and no bruising. Liposuction, on the other hand, can produce dramatic results with one treatment. Doing so requires anesthesia in one form or another, whether it is given intravenously or injected into the fatty tissues to be treated. There is always bruising and pain during the recovery period. The risks are certainly greater, though they are small risks. But the results can be much more significant after just a single treatment.

Freezes fat: It is a device placed on the skin where you have over an inch of fat thickness. It then freezes the fat and destroys it. Your body will get rid of the dead fat. It is a slow process and the results are limited. Do not expect the same results as with traditional liposuction.

Freeze the fat: Eseentially, a suction cup with two cooling plates is placed on the fold of fatty tissue, and a bit of suction draws the fold of tissue into the applicator. It is then cooled for about an hour. The fat cells freeze, but the skin doesn't, and remains ok. The body then gradually clears away the freeze-damaged fat cells over about 2 months.

Coolsculpting : Use of topical non-invasive cooling to freeze fat cells. Once crystalized, they are eliminated from the body and over several weeks the remaining cells condense to dramatically reduce far bulges around the body and extremeties.

Freezing cells: Coolsculpting works by cooling fat cells down to a temperature that induces self destruction of the cells. The other types of cells in the treated area would require a much colder temperature to kill them and so coolsculpting is very safe. A vacuum pulls your skin and fat into the applicator and then 2 cooling plates cool the tissue down to the necessary temperature to "freeze" the cells.
