Don't: For vast majority of adults and children, wax will come out on its own and you just need to wipe away wax that you see on the outside of the ear, no need to put anything into ear canal. Only people that have had ear surgery or are born with narrow ear canals need special cleaning.

Ear Wax Helps: Ear wax is the ears natural way of protecting the skin of the ear canal from infection and other types of damage. The wax actually has a natural pH (acidity) that prevents bacteria and fungus from growing in the ear canal. If you scrape the wax away and leave the skin uncovered, then you are at a higher likelihood of getting and external ear infection which can be quite painful. Hope this helps!

Don't : Unless your ear is occluded and you can't hear, leave your ear wax alone. You can clean it from the very outside of your ear only but stay away from the canal. Millions of dollars could be saved if people would stop fiddling around with their ears. I spend a significant time each day trying to fix problems caused by people cleaning their ears with either q-tips or irrigations. Wax is protective.
