Toenail : Toenail fungus is very difficult to get rid of because it is necessary to treat this until an entirely new nail grows out. Removal of the nail is sometimes helpful, but can be uncomfortable and does not always work. Treatment should include also treating any "athlete's foot" or tinea pedis (as it is called in medicine) to reduce the risk of repeat infection. Topical treatments can be as effective as oral treatments with less of a risk of side effects from medications. Tea tree oil has a significant antifungal effect if you prefer to not use synthetic medications. If you are comfortable with synthetic medications, you can use any nonprescription cream or ointment (ointments tend to get into the crevices better). The real trick is to be consistent with your treatment. Apply it twice daily until there is a new, clean toenail from cuticle to tip. This can take anywhere from a few months to a year.

Teatree Oil: Teatree oil. Topical antifungal agents over the counter or prescription. There is no long term "cure".
