To protect the baby: All blood types either have rh antibodies (rh+) or don't (rh-). When a baby's rh+ blood cells enter the blood of an rh- mother (during pregnancy or birth), the mother's immune system makes antibodies to attack the baby's red blood cells. The baby's cells break apart causing severe anemia. Rhogam prevents the mother from making harmful antibodies. It must be given during any pregnancy or abortion.
