A 36-year-old member asked:

If i have low hcg levels, does that mean i am going to have a miscarriage?

No: Hcg alone cannot tell one they are going to miscarry. In early pregnancy the HCG should double every 2-3 days. If it is falling, or is not rising substantially over time, it is likely that there is a problem with the pregnancy (impending or current miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy). Once there is a visible pregnancy on ultrasound, hcgs have little value, and the ultrasound is more meaningful.

A 22-year-old female asked:

If i were to be in a middle of a miscarriage would my hCG levels still go up or would they go down?

Down: Usually they go down quickly. But the diagnosis could be wrong. When they do not drop then an ectopic pregnancy should be considered, . You would need to be followed closely by your doctor.

Had another miscarriage, how long should I wait for my hCG levels to go down?

Miscarriage: You should first wait until the HCG is less than 10, and then wait until after your first period to try again. And be sure you keep taking Folic Acid or a prenatal vitamin daily.

Sounds like: It's almost already down. When levels drop below about 5, it's considered completed.

How long does it take for your hCG levels to go back to 0 after miscarriage?

Depends: It depends on how far along in the pregnancy you were. Usually the drop is fairly quickly.
Dr. Brian Nguyen
Obstetrics and Gynecology 11 years experience
The drop is fairly quick but if you're doing actual measurements of the levels, it's possible to have an elevated quantitative HCG for up to a month.
