Hyaluronic acid TMJ: It is highly effective in threating some forms of osteoarthritis when injected into the joint. I am no familar with it use in TMJ treatment. We use Botox for theraputic treatment. It helps relax the muscles in the jaw allowing the correct ones to function in their place. Less stress on the joint and less clenching and grinding.

Non surgical is best: The best approach is to avoid entering the jaw joint. You should first have a proper evaluation to confirm the problem is from the tmj. Conservative therapy with soft foods, non-steriodal, antinflammatory medication(over the counter)and fabrication of a flat plane bite plate that you wear at night mainly. Also stress management is very helpful to reduce the clenching or grinding of the jaws at night.

What caused the TMJD: Joints do not go bad without a reason(s). Injections into the joint may be treating the effect and not the cause. Try working with your doctor or get a second opinion as to why your joint is dysfunctional and then address the cause, not the effect. You joint went bad b-cause. Find the cause and you will find the best answer. Use diagnostic reversible therapy whenever possible.

Not proven: The superiority of HA injections was shown only against placebo saline injections, but outcomes are comparable with those achieved with corticosteroid injections or oral appliances. The available literature seems to be inconclusive as to the effectiveness of HA injections with respect to other therapeutic modalities in treating TMJ disorders. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20806734
