Disc displacement ?: Tmj stands for the joint that allows for the movement of the lower jaw or the mandible on the skull- tempro mandibular joint. There is a disc in between the head of the joint called the condyl this disc is the meniscus. This should move as the joint rotates. If it doesn't and gets caught in front or behind the condyl in the movement it is displaced and can cause the jaw to be locked, or sounds.

Cartilage in joint: The TMJ has a fibrocartilagenous disc between the ball and socket. This can become misaligned, usually because the ball of the joint moves too far up and back in the socket whent he teeth are brought together. You will need to find the best functional joint position (usually with a splint) and then treat to this position.

Articular Disk: Your jaw may be locked, which means that the articular disk that joins the upper and lower jaws (maxilla and mandible, ) may be out of place. It may be displaced forward and does not allow the mandible to get back to its comfortable position and the lower teeth therefore do not come together.
