A member asked:

Is there any way to test whether i have torn my meniscus or only have a simple knee sprain?

No: Both cause pain, swelling, and loss of function. Sprains are typically tender over a wider area inside the knee and hurt with or without activity, but then recover over time without any symptoms. A torn meniscus hurts all the time at first, but tenderness is limited to the joint line. With time it hurts less but remains swollen and symptomatic, especially with squatting or twisting.

MRI: Physical exam by an orthopaedic surgeon with complimentary MRI can usually differentiate between a meniscus tear and a ligament injury (sprain).
