Your typical diet: If your typical diet is a healthy balanced diet, no need to change. If you are trying to lose weight, keep in mind that breastfeeding consumes 350-500 calories per day, and adjust accordingly. There are no foods to specifically avoid or include.

Well balanced: Eating a variety of food and making sure you are getting adequate calories (breastfeeding uses an additional 500-700 calories a day!) is the most important. Your baby is exposed to all the foods you eat, so eat a healthy well balanced and varied diet. Stay away from processed and refined sugars and grains. Also make sure you are well hydrated, at least 64ounces of liquid a day!

Whole foods: Focus on eating "whole foods" - not processed, without artificial colorings and sweeteners. Eat lean proteins, whole grains, plenty of fruits and vegetables and foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids. Get plenty of calcium and vitamin d. Hydrate - lots of water. Watch for sensitivities in your baby - if lots of gas/colic or rashy, eliminate 1 food at a time (i.e. Dairy) and see how he/she is.

Well-balanced diet: All over the world, women breastfeed their babies just fine. These women have very different diets from one another, yet as long as they eat balanced diets with a good variety of foods, they should do well with their breastfeeding.
