Phacoemulsification: A microsurgical cataract surgery through clear cornea with a small incision. It is done as an outpatient surgery under a topical anesthesia. The incision can be made with a blade, a diamond blade or laser. The cataract is extracted with ultrasonic machine called phacoemulsification. Then the cataract is replaced with intraocular lens implant. The implant can be a single vision or a multifocal.

Laser cataract surg: The lens (behind iris) is usually clear & is like a pillow in a pillow case. When cloudy/white & affecting vision, surgery recommended. Goal is to remove top part of pillow case (anterior capsule), remove pillow (cataract), keep back pillow case intact (posterior capsule), place IOL; thru sm wound. Advances in cataract surgery (ie Femtosecond laser surgery) help! More info: eyedoc2020.blogspot.com
