Infection: It is an infection. Containing life (bacteria, parasite) or virus. Life and viruses do not originate from nothing. They must reproduce. So, the only way to get infected with any infection is to be exposed to it. If you have an std and your partner does not, then you got it from your other partner (or past partner).

STD: The term means "sexually transmitted". The only way in which you can get this is through sexual activity. It will not generate in your body spontaneously. If your partner does not have it (and unless you see their medical records you only have their word for it), and you have not had sex with anyone else and you have an std, your partner gave it to you.
