Nerve vs. joint: Pain with gripping something may have to do with carpal tunnel syndrome especially if numbness and/or tingling are present. Pain is usually distributed along the thumb, index and middle fingers but sometimes can involved the ring and pinky. If you have numbness/tingling as mentioned above, a trial of wrist splints may be helpful. Local heat, ibuprofen/naproxen, paraffin applications worth trying.
