Nerve compression: Compressing the median nerve will cause this on the palm side, compressing the radial nerve will cause his on the back of the hand. It's doubtful there is significant damage. Give it is day or so, it should return to normal. A blood clot often causes pain and swelling, it is rare for it to cause numbness. Blood clots also tend not to form in arms during sleep.
