Hard to say: There is not much research on the benefits or risks of barefoot running. Midfoot fractures are usually stress injuries and the loss of shock absorption with barefoot running could lead to a fracture.

Yes: Stress fractures of the metatarsals was the most common injury fond in minimalist runners in a study that we performed. It was published in foot & ankle international this past year.
