A member asked:

Are the store bought shoe inserts about as good as custom orthotics?

No: Orthotics are about comfort. If they are comfortable, then they are as good but custom do tend to be more comfortable. I recommend soft rather than hard plastic.

Not all the time: Custom orthotics are made from a mould of your foot and are made just for you, whereas over-the-counter orthotics are made for the average person.

No.: The store-bought inserts tend to break down over the course of year of use, while the custom made devices can last over a decade, depending on how active you are. Custom inserts are also molded to match a cast of your foot, so they will provide much more individualized support.

SOMETIMES: In certain instances, OTC devices are all you need. Start there and see how you feel.
