Anti-inflammatory : Depending on the cause of the swelling, try some over-the-counter anti-inflammatories, such as ibuprofen. Make sure that you have no other health risks that may interfere with use of this medicine (ulcers, reflux, bleeding disorders, etc). You may also try ice water rinses, although this could make sensitive teeth hurt. As always, it is best to follow up with your dentist as soon as possible.

Advil, (ibuprofen) ice, &dentist: First, go see a dentist so that the source of the pain can be fixed. In the meantime, ice packs and advil (ibuprofen) should help.

Short term: If the other suggested answers don't work, it may not be possible to reduce the swelling without the help of a dentist. If the swelling is from an abscessed tooth it could get worse and close the airway to prevent breathing. Urgent care from a dentist or oral surgeon is important.
