Ganglion cyst: The cause of ganglion cysts is not known. One theory suggests that trauma causes the tissue of the joint to break down forming small cysts, which then join into a larger, more obvious mass. The most likely theory involves a flaw in the joint capsule or tendon covering (sheath) that allows the joint tissue to bulge out.

It's possible...: The accident may have jammed the big toe joint causing damage to the cartilage (or even a fracture into the joint) which could eventually lead to spur formation at the big toe joint (hallux limitus or rigidus). A cyst is also possible from trauma to a tendon sheath. See a podiatrist for exam and more details.

It is possible.: Any trauma that could cause damage to the tendon and bone could lead to the development of a ganglion cyst involving the tendon or an overgrowth of th involved bone. Have it evaluated by you physician.
