Pain: Assuming it is not a dry socket (a 20 on a scale of 10) 800 mg of Motrin three times /day for three days works for my patients. Be sure to rinse with salt water and you cannot ice too much for the first three days (ice on and off every twenty minutes).

Time: There are a variety of things that can be done for pain relief resulting from tooth extraction. Analgesics (pain-killers) such as Ibuprofen or tylenol (acetaminophen) which are available over the counter can be helpful or in very painful instances your doctor can prescribe a more potent analgesic. Heat applications and things like elevating your head to reduce blood flow to the area are also helpful.
