Many causes: Someone may grind their teeth for a number of reasons. Often, the problem occurs because the muscles of the face and jaw are trying to get the teeth in a comfortable position. The muscles may be in spasm, you may have a tmj/tmd problem, stress, infection. Best to see a dentist asap. Often the cause is difficult to determine, so may have to treat the symptoms with a mouthpiece.

See a Dentist : Grinding your teeth at night can be caused by stress, anxiety, diet or dental related problems. With or without symptoms, a dentist can diagnose the condition to determine the etiology, adverse affects and treatment recommendations. This may include a mouth splint to be worn at night to protect the teeth as well as existing restorations from abnormal forces that may cause wear and fracture.

Hard to avoid: It is hard to avoid grinding your teeth. You may grind more under stressful situations. I would check with your dentist to see if a night guard would help your situation. Night guards help reduce damage to your teeth and relieve jaw discomfort.
