Guessing here: But it maybe that the tooth in question has been worn down to a point that grinding more tooth off to have room for a crown would cause exposure of the nerve of the tooth. Alternatives are not good but might include crowns to shorten the opposing teeth and gum surgery to make the tooth in question longer(crown lengthening).
