Denture problems: If by denture problems do you mean loose dentures or sore mouth? Many denture wearers start off with reduced ridges due to loss of bone. Over time there is often additional bone loss from wearing dentures. There are also changes in the musculature of the mouth and face. Chronic loose dentures can cause sores because they move around and rub against the tissues of the mouth.

Bone loss: Wearing dentures over time results in bone loss. This results in ill-fitting dentures which results in more rapid bone loss. Etc. Many people do not get new dentures or relines when needed, and rely on adhesives to keep poor fitting dentures in place and allow them to overstress the bone. Guess what ? --> more and accelerated bone loss. Implants are the way to go before bone is lost.

Coordination / bone: Conventional dentures requires good bone to achieve optimal fit, and they require good coordination and muscle control to wear well in the aged individual. People who are older, often have more bone loss and begin to loose control of their lips, mouth, tongue, and cheeks. These muscle groups are important in controlling the dentures. This is a reason why come older adults have more trouble.

Denture problems: Part of the reason, not addressed, is those patients choose to have dentures, as they are often the least expensive alternative, so they willingly make that compromise. Ive had discussions with patients, once money gets involved they often choose to settle for the denture, but im sure if they were independently surveyed i dont think most of them are happy with their choice.

Tooth loss: From decay, gum disease, poor oral hygiene, trauma, etc. if teeth lost, bone dissolves away. Important to see Dentist 2x/year for care, floss daily, brush 2x/day for 2 full minutes. Don't smoke anything. Alcohol only in moderation. It's easy to neglect teeth/gums/bone because early-on there's no pain. Have regular care.
