A member asked:

Can depersonalization be mistaken for epilepsy, or the other way around?

Good question: Epilepsy can be a component of complex neurological disorders. Many patients with autism also have epilepsy. Patients with psychotic disorders can also have epilepsy. Medications used for personality disorders can bring out epilepsy. Patients with epilepsy can have personality disorders either primary or brought out by medication. A thorough neurological evaluation would be appropriate.

It's possible: But seeing a neurologist for an exam and special testing could differentiate between the two.

On the surface: Chronic depersonalization, a feeling of unreality and watching yourself, is a dissociative symptom that can be present with many psychological disorders, including ptsd, did, severe anxiety and depression, and more. It could appear as a seizure, such as petit mal or temporal lobe, but a neurological exam with eeg can clarify the diagnosis. Psychological evaluation may also be needed.
