OTC: Take some otc pain mediation such as advil, motrin, aleve (naproxen) or what you would normally take for a headache. It's normal to have some soreness when the palatal expander is first placed and for each subsequent adjustment. If you have any questions, call and speak to the orthodontist.

OTC pain meds: I am assuming it is your child. If it is, you may want to talk to your child's doctor, if he takes other meds or has allergies. Some otc pain relievers can help and make sure you talk to the dentist who placed it.

Lots: Some soreness is to be expected with any tooth/bone movement. Usually resolves with time. Take advil/motrin/ibuprofen 1 tab 4x/day w food or liquids, rinse 3x/day w 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water (rinse-spit out-finish the glass), eat a soft high-protein diet (all those chicken soup jokes were actually correct), ask your orthodontic specialist for recommendations.
