Cream or pill?: Impetigo is a common skin infection in kids. It's often treated with Bactroban (mupirocin) Cream at first. If it's been three weeks, then he needs to be seen again. He may need oral antibiotic (pills or liquid) to clear it completely.

Impetigo: Impetigo is caused by a bacteria. The lesions can become "super-infected" and may require oral antibiotics. If they have not resolved with topical treatment, and the drainage please get your son rechecked by your pediatrician.

Impetigo: It is important that you bring him back to his pediatrician and have the pus cultured to know whether the bacterial cause is strep or staph. If staph grows out in the culture, it's also necessary to know if it's mrsa. Repeated staph infections need a dilute clorox bath - his doctor will tell you the proportions.
