Like your question: We all would love to have increased retentive ability, and there are some ways of improving our capacity to learn. We all need aerobic exercise, a healthy diet, and good sleep habits. That said, most teachers are aware that in a lecture, an important point should be mentioned at least thrice to insure retention. Also, if you can review significant items just prior to sleep, you will keep.

See below: Avoid cramming, try to plan your studies so you will be learning information in chunks that are easier to process, rather than in one big piece, use mnemonics, associations to help you process the material and be productive. Food rich in omega-3s; complex carbs, not skipping meals, eating breakfast every morning; staying well -hydrated, good sleeping habits; exercise, taking breaks from studying.
