how long does swelling typically last after hand surgery?

Depends: Some amount of hand swelling after hand surgery is normal. The amount of hand swelling depends on the condition and the treatment needed for the condition. Is important to control the swelling mostly with elevation and keeping the fingers moving. If this fails occupational therapists can help to reduce the swelling.

Depends: You should always expect swelling after surgery. The amount will depend on the surgery itself, the patient, and how aggressively the hand is being used. Strict hand elevation, wrapping, and anti-inflammatories (only if ok with your surgeon) can help minimize swelling. Hand therapists can also be very helpful in controlling post-operative swelling.

Depends: Depends on the kind and magnitude of surgery. There is almost always some swelling after any hand surgery (or hand injury.) that is why it is important to keep the affected part above the level of your heart for 2-3 days. Any surgery or injury around the small joints in the fingers will be associated with longer lasting swelling; this is normal. It should gradually improve.

Pinched nerve: Pinched nerve at the wrist (carpal tunnel syndrome) is a common cause for such symptoms. However other causes of peripheral neuropathy should be considered and ruled out by history, physical exam and some blood tests. Diabetes, thyroid disease and some medications are common causes. I suggest you discuss with your pcp.

Not necessarily : It depends on the health of your grandmother and the type of fracture that she sustained. Some can be repaired simply and others require a more invasive procedure. If the risk is great because she has poor health they may hold on surgery. If she is a healthy 87 yo then they would operate. My 105 yo grandmother had hers repaired at age 85. She was active till 105. Hope she is ok.

Go to: Another surgeon. Many of today's surgeons are trained laparoscopically but are not so confident in open procedures. Older surgeons are more experienced in both, since they started with open procedures and then they adopted laparoscopic ones.
