Depends: Do you have a family history of rd? Do you have flashes of light? How frequently are the flashes? Do you see floaters? How many and what type? Once a year is a good idea for a dilated exam unless there is concern that another tear is imminent. If, based on your response to questions above, a tear is thought to be more imminent, see doctor more often.
