Be relaxed: Keep head elevated, ice as much as possible, take your pain medications as close as possible to bedtime as possible. After the first 24 hours warm salt water rinses. After 48 hours i suggest using an irrigating syringe to clean out lower extraction socket. If all this fails call your surgeon. He/she will need to evaluate you.

Pain Meds can help: So much in dental treatment depends on the patient, their pain tolerance as well as the type of extraction, ie; bony, or ankylosed. A surgeon's skill, touch & the way they do a surgery. Great hands with a patient who follows all of the home care directions can lead to a very positive result with very little pain. Pain could be minimal or could last weeks. Pain meds can help you get some sleep.

No problem: You should have very little problem sleeping after an extraction. If you have pain your dentist can prescribe the appropriate medication. It's always a good idea to put a towel on your pillow in case you have a little blood come out of your mouth on the first night.

Follow Instructions: Most patients having wisdom teeth removed will usually have some gauze sponges placed over the extraction sites. It is not advisable to sleep with the sponges in the mouth. Sleeping with your head elevated on two pillows will help with the swelling. The pain medication prescribed for you can also allow you to rest and sleep comfortably.
