A member asked:

Claritin (loratadine) and prednisone; can these be taken together to treat severe hive outbreak for a 15 year old?

Yes: Using an antihistamine like Claritin (loratadine) in conjunction with prednisone, a steroid which decreases inflammation, is a good combination for treating hives. Look back to see if you can identify any triggers for the hives...Foods, additives, new laundry soap, products. It is a challenge to figure out the causes. Start keeping a food and beverage and product log.

Yes: These medications work differently. Claritin (loratadine) is an antihistamine which blocks the predominant cause of hives. In severe cases, Prednisone is a non-specific anti-inflammatory, it is given because it stops the mediators that can cause hives and acts faster than antihistamines. You should take both and continue Claritin (loratadine) after Prednisone course is completed for hive control.
