Needs to see the doc: It may take some time for swelling to subside following an injury. If it was properly examined and the doc decided that surgery was not needed, there should have been treatment measures rendered that included immobilization to avoid re-injury. Call the doc that you saw and inform them of this. It is also important that your mother-in-law be compliant and allow the ankle to heal by resting.
