For your injury: This would not be uncommon. Try keeping the foot elevated and icing whenever you can.....

Gravity: The simple answer is that because your feet are the lowest extremity that fluids will naturally pool there for up to 6 months after and injury, surgery, etc. If the swelling continues past the 6 month mark you should go see your podiatrist for an evaluation.

See below.: You have suffered severe injury to the foot and it may require a longer time period for the swelling to go down. At this time i would advise compression and physical therapy.

Takes time: Swelling from a severe injury such as this can take up to a year or longer to completely resolve. Compression, elevation as well as exercise/therapy will help speed up process. Be patient.
