Probably not: It would be difficult, i think, to provide you with a comprensive psychiatric evaluation here on healthtap. Schizophrenia is quite a bit more common compared to dissociative disorders, which are relatively rare. Also, there are really no medications for dissociative d/os, whereas, there are many available for schizophrenia. My advice is to follow up regularly with a board certified psychiatrist.

SPECIFICS: These are really two different diagnoses and not sure why you are seeing so many doctors. Depends on the symptoms you are experiencing.

difficult to tell: Do the voices - which presumably you have - come from inside your head or from without? The dissociative experiences scale may as well be a discriminator - but not definitive. Is there a family history of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder? Was there childhood trauma? Do you have symptoms of ptsd - startle easily, triggered to remember by situations reminding you of the trauma, intrusive memories?

Do an EEG: Get a sleep deprived electroencephalogram/eeg to rule out seizure disorder...

Schizophrenia vs DID: Did is a disorder of amnesia. There are also other personalities that talk to you and that you can converse with. You cannot converse with schiz. Voices. Did voices are more internal and schiz. More external. Did voices start usually by age 5, schiz. Voices at a later age. History of abuse by age 5 in most did, can be present in schiz, but not necessary. Did is a complex form of ptsd. May co-occur.

What's schizophrenia: Dissoiciative disorder is losing a sense of self. In its extreme (which is way overdiagnosed) is multiple personality. Schizophrenia is disorganized thinking and hallucinations, often noticed more by others that the person who has it. They are very different and require a psychiatrist to help you determine. Schizophrenia definitely needs medication. Dissociative disorders usually don't.

Yes: Schizophrenia does not involve amnesia. The voices tend to be either external or internal but they cannot enter into conversations with you if they are schizophrenic in nature, whereas if they are dissociative in nature they can carry out long conversations with you and you will indeed hear them carrying on conversations with each other in the background. Remember that it is possible to have both. I have treated people with up to three different types of psychoses at the same time, bipolar psychoses, dissociative psychoses, and drug-induced psychoses from jimson weed. People with dissociative disorder tend to get a lot of hang up phone calls at home. I will not elaborate on that here. People with dissociative disorders make purchases that they don't remember having made and carry on conversations with other people that they later do not recall. They have friends who call them bya different name and they are confused by this. I've even known one person to take two classes in college that were scheduled at the same time. She got a's in both classes. Family members of people with dissociative disorders will often find them curled up with a blanket or a teddy bear. They will often hide in closets or on the floor behind couches. They can be seen sucking their thumbs or talking in a little girls or little boys voice. The voices in schizophrenia talk at you but not with you. They often leave disparaging remarks. Also, the person with a dissociative disorder is much more likely to have underlying post traumatic stress disorder.
