Maybe operation: Key issue is whether the effect on the nerve root is creating progressive weakness and numbness, and if there is risk of bladder involvement. If so, surgery seems an option. European studies indicate that many discs dry out and shrink over 9-10 month time periods, so waiting might be worthwhile otherwise. Talk to a surgeon who specializes in back procedures, neuro or ortho.

Depends on Symptoms: Treatment for a herniated disk with isolated neck or back pain should focus on noninvasive techniques such as therapy, exercises, and short term medications such as nsaids and muscle relaxants. If corresponding radiating nerve pain is significant, injections and possibly surgery may be considered after noninvasive measures. Surgery is not a good option in disk herniation without nerve symptoms.

Disc herniation: Medication therapy is good for short term management, but it won't change your condition. Please discuss with your doctor other treatment options like therapy, other injections or surgical evaluation.
