Therapy: With a herniated disc: leg weakness=surgery; no leg weakness=therapy. Therapy will consist of cold packs, stretching and strengthening muscles, avoidance of any heavy lifting, anti-inflammatory medications, and possibly physical therapy. See your family doctor for a thorough evaluation and an explanation of all your options.

OMM: Osteopathic manipulation might be able to give you some relief in this case. You should hunt around a bit for someone who specializes in treating low back pain and see what they can do for you.

Injections and medication are solely symptomatic relievers, but occasionally can temporarily quell the inflammation and nerve root swelling. Yet, over months many of these disc ruptures will desiccate and shrink relieving the pressure. In the meantime, see a physical therapist and try to be conscientious doing McKenzie Back Exercises. A sacroiliac belt might also help.
