Yes: Sonicare, or any power toothbrush, is going to help prevent gum disease. They are more effective at removing dental plaque than a regular toothbrush. They are not the "magic bullet", however. Regular dental visits, flossing, and rinsing with an antibacterial mouth rinse such as listerine or crest prohealth are still the best bet. Hope that helps!

Electric toothbrush?: I am assuming you are referring to sonicare electric toothbrush. Brushing and flossing is definitely part of keeping up with good oral hygiene and maintaining your teeth and gum in good shape and therefore free of gingivitis and gum disease. Electric toothbrushes are definitely good tools to use. Sonicare is one of so many brands out there.

Prevention maybe: Sometimes the patients that i had with the very best hygiene, and using the latest tech toothbrushes, etc., still developed or maintained gum disease. Some people seem to be prone to it...Heredity, acidity of their saliva... But using the sonicare or other electric toothbrushes should be your line of defense. Can't guarantee that you can further prevent gum disease, but everything extra helps.

Floss: Sonicare makes brushing easier on arms. Only way to further prevent gum disease is flossing, which is the only way to clean below gums.

Doesn't get there: Research has shown that tooth brushes reach less than 1mm under the gum tissue and floss only removes about 15% of the plaque. Both of these are insufficient in being able to manage the bacterial biofilm that causes gum disease. An article in j clin dent 2012;23:48–56) compared scaling and root planing to the perio protect method.(ppm) the ppm was significantly better than conventional methods.

A tool: Any electric TB is a tool that helps to remove plaque. Dental floss is also necessary as regular dental care.
