Nothing: One is a doctor of dental surgery and the other is doctor of dental medicine. The training is the same.

None: Different schools established the degree way back in their history. Dds stands for doctor of dental sugery and dmd stands for doctor of dental medicine. At one time, the dds degree meant that the dentist was more practice oriented and the dmd was more academic and research oriented. Now, the degrees are the same.
