Herpes simplex: This common virus is a squatter. Once it sets up shop it never goes away entirely, but in many instances outbreaks diminish both in frequency and severity with time. It can be shortened with oral acyclovir-containing compounds. Would not use the topical form of this since not only does it not shorten the illness, but may induce resistance.
