Staph / strep: Mouth is full of bacteria, but staph and strep are the most common causes of an infection like this. Sometimes there is a stone in the duct or an underlying condition such as malnutrition that can contribute.

Bacteria: Clogged and infected sublingual salivary glands, with bacterial presence cause this. The salivary ducts can become occluded, blocking flow into the mouth.Trauma can cause this.
