The best orthotics: Are made from a mold of the foot, most commonly done with plaster. Many doctors use foam impressions, but in my opinion they're not always as good. Some of us now use 3d scanning devices which are pretty doggned accurate and the turnaround time for the orthotics is greatly improved.

A : Proper cast or computer generated scan is very necessary. The orthotic is only as accurate as the mold.

Yes.: If you're looking to beef up the shoes you already have, get a good insert or custom orthotic: you can use them to improve the shoes you already own. Over the counter orthotics typically break down over 6-12 months, but a good custom orthotic made from a mold of your foot will last years. This will also ensure it is customized exactly to you and will correct your foot specifically.

Orthotics: Yes - a proper cast/mold of the foot is absolutely critical to making the orthotics. See your podiatrist for help
