Depends on severity: If the child is not in any pain, it is not an emergency, however it should be checked by your dentist.

Chipped teeth: It depends how extensive the chip is. If you see a pinkish shadow where the tooth broke it may be very close to the nerve chamber and you should see the dentist asap or if the child is in pain. If it is a small chip the dentist may just smooth the area so it is not sharp irritating the tissue.

Soon: The sooner, the better. The tooth may or not need treatment. Child should be examined for broken root, damage to surrounding bone, as well as displacement of the tooth. If it's lower tooth jawbone needs to be checked. The more severe the fracture, the sooner it should be seen. Call your dentist, describe the damage, and ask for their advice.
