Yes: There are many medications and orthotics that can be used to help with the pain and keep one functional.

Musician: Muscians from the novice to the professional need to adapt as they age. The string player who changes technique for vibrato, the guitar player who slows down, all are part of aging. Playing an instrument can also be protective, by keeping joints limber and strong, the key is to adapt and avoid sever pain but keep playing its better than stopping typically. Once you stop its harder to start.

Yes: I have treated several professional musicians for thumb arthritis using a minimally invasive technique (arthroscopic hemitrpeziectomy) along with stem cell resurfacing of the joint with excellent success. One in particular has been playing guitar at the grande ole oprey in nashville 3 weeks after surgery. There are definitely some good options and i can give out references if you like.

Lots: There are many options for treatment. Medications like anti-inflammatory options like ibuprofen, naproxen, etc. Other options include synvisc/euflexxa injections to help lubricate the joint or even platelet/stem cell therapies as well. Generally these options are not covered by your insurance though. Check out Regenexx.Com.

Think about it: There usually isn't a rush to perform surgery for arthritic palliation. Get a second opinion, possibly from a rheumatologist.
A 21-year-old member asked:

Will my arthritis medication(s) interact with other medications?

Drug interactions: Without knowing the medications, it is very difficult to say that the medications interact. Your pharmacist should be able to tell you if there is an interaction. If you have an iphone there is an app called epocrates that has a drug interaction check which is what I use in the clinic. With any medications, there is always a chance of drug interactions.

Dr. Bryan Levey

Yes: Exercise is recommended for everyone able to do it. The key here is not making your arthritis worse when you exercise. Swimming is often good for people with arthritis because it's low impact, and incorporates both resistance and cardiovascular training.

A 39-year-old male asked:

Why is my right thumb numb?

2 doctor answers4 doctors weighed in
Dr. Barry Handler
Plastic Surgery 32 years experience
Numb thumb: There too many possibilities to discuss in 400 characters. The nerve pathway goes from your brain through your neck and down your arm to your thumb. The problem could be anywhere along the way. It could be as simple as pressure on the digital nerve from sleeping the wrong way to a brain tumor. If you are concerned i suggest you get it looked at by a physician.
