Weight yes Muscle no: Weight is gained no matter what one eats, as long as it has calories. So, 200 calories of sugar will put on as much weight as 200 cal of protein. However, a good protein bar is more nutritious and a sugary candy bar. The protein bar shouldn't cause a sugar high followed by hunger for more sugar. A person eating healthily is also motivated to work out more (which is the only way to gain muscle).

Protein bars: Eating protein bars is not a guarantee to gain muscle. Increasing caloric intake over calories burned will lead to weight gain. Protein supplementation can assist a program designed to ^ weight & muscle with appropriate exercise.
