Maybe arthritis: Degenerative arthritis (old age) may be the cause, typically affecting the smaller joints of the fingers. Swelling and mild tenderness are common. Meds like Ibuprofen or Aleve (naproxen) may help in small doses and not for more than a couple of weeks to avoid side-effects. Warm soaks, gloves and balms such as traumeel or arnica may help.

Finger: Agree with dr griggs, the usual answer in an elderly population is arthritis & the synovitis associated with it.
