A member asked:

When is an unfinished root canal ready for filling? my tooth/jaw pain has subsided, but lymph nodes still swollen, ok to finish?

When it's clean: After the canal is thoroughly disinfected and shaped, it's ready for filling. The body's response to the completed root canal may take awhile so it's possible the lymph node resolution you are looking for may be delayed. If there are still symptoms a month after completing the procedure there may be some other treatment required. After completion, as long as the trend is improving, be patient.

Possibly: Your dentist will decide based on the conditions i side the tooth. Lymph node swelling can sometimes take a while to recede even with no infection present.

Variable: Your endodontist is the one to advise you of the timing. In the meantime -- stay away from eating near / on that tooth. You might break it.

It depends: I have completed thousands of root canals on infected cases in one visit. When a root canal is done microscopically, we can clean shape sterilize and fill canals in one visit most of the time if your nodes are swollen, you should be on an antibiotic, which your dentist will see when he examines you next. Sometimes when there is a longstanding lesion at the root ends, surgical removal is necessary.

Probably: Probably. But seek the guidance of the doc doing the procedure. Are you on antibiotics?

Yes, it ok to finish: Swollen lymph nodes in your neck and jaw is a symptom of infection. It can take a long time for the infection to clear up even after the root canal is completed. Ask your dentist for more information.
