What are the benefits of xylitol in dental health?

No Cavities! : Xylitol, a natural sugar alcohol, is a great alternative to sugar because it can't be consumed by oral bacteria. Therefore, the teeth will not decay. In addition, it promotes saliva formation to prevent “dry mouth”. It can also promote mineral absorption for repairing damaged tooth enamel thus increasing tooth structure. More than two pieces of gum a day, however, may cause stomach pains.

Acid balance: Xylitol is non-fermentable and therefore cannot be converted to acids by oral bacteria, thus it helps to restore a proper alkaline/acid balance in the mouth. It also inhibits dental plaque formation.

Prevent tooth decay: Bacteria metabolize sugar to form byproduct of acid which can dissolve the mineral component of your tooth (tooth decay process). Xylitol is a substitute for sugar, and hence, cannot be used by bacteria to produce acid.
