Depends: You probably need to have your dentist evaluate the joint. Some patients have popping and clicking in the joint which is fine as along as there are no associated functional defects or severe pain. Most patients do fine.

TIMING: I was wondering if the popping/clicking has appeared since the invisalign treatment was initiated and if if has gradually increased? Make sure you inform the dentist/orthodontist of your symptoms and changes.

NO: Your jaw should be painless, noiseless, have a full range of motion without deviation or deflection. If any of these exist...Stop treatment, get to your dentists and find a stable jaw position where you need to be treated. If you jaw is cracking it is not a stable relationship and it will probably get worse, not better. Find a different answer!

TMJ/TMD is treatable: I think objectively, having orthodontic treatment with Invisalign aggravated a preexisting condition. Invisalign didn’t cause it. Temporary discontinue Invisalign treatment and ask your orthodontist for referral to orofacial pain (OFP) practitioner for evaluation and conservative and efficient treatment.

Evaluation: Your symptoms suggest a problem with your TMJoint(s). Orthodontic treatment can help resolve or exacerbate any problems. It is imperative that you be evaluated and treated by someone who has extensive training and experience in this area. Often a team approach by an Orthodontic Specialist and Restorative Dentist is essential to a proper diagnosis and resolution of this issue with long term success

No: Not normal. Ask your dentist. You may want a second opinion from an orthodontist if the person doing your invisalign is not an orthodontist.
