Great!: An oral orthotic (spint/night guard), designed correctly for the correct problem, can be very helpful. The etiology (cause) of the problem also needs to be addressed. Parafunctional habits like clenching, grinding, gum chewing, biting finger nails, chewing ice? Arthritis? Past trauma?

Excellent: Most TMJ splints can help alleviate some or all of the symptoms from TMJ discomfort. The key is proper diagnosis.

Necessary: Splint therapy (an oral mouthpiece to help with tmj/tmd) is usually a necessary adjunct to tmj/tmd treatment. It is an excellent part of the treatment, but usually not the only part. Exercises, therapy, and other modalities may be needed in addition to the splint.

Pretty good: Pretty good success rate. Depends on the problem and the skill of the clinician. Make sure your're being treated by a TMJ expert. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
