Bruising/pain: Severe pain when you move or touch your toe plus bruising. However, x-rays are the only way to tell for sure. So please see a podiatrist and they can help you with this.

Get an X-ray: An x-ray will determine if there is a fracture and if possible, request that the doctor order a weight bearing x-rays for a clearer and better comparative view for fractures.
