Root sensitivity: If only one tooth hurts then decay probably is causing your pain. If many of your teeth hurt when you have something hot or cold then root sensitivity could be your problem. See your dentist in any case for tooth pain to find out the problem. As we age, the gums (gums protect teeth from hot and cold) drop down exposing the roots of your teeth.
